About the Nanaimo Hornets Rugby club

Who we are

Nanaimo Hornets were originally formed under the name of Nanaimo Rovers in the year 1888, one of 3 Vancouver Island teams in that year. The name was changed later that century. Up until the mid 1970's, the Hornets have moved their home pitch to numerous venues finally building our own Hornets' Nest at May Bennett Park. The club built a 3500 square foot log building that houses a main hall, licensed bar, kitchen, change rooms etc. The building is situated overlooking the international size rugby pitch that was a labour of love for our members. We are fortunate to have a great working relationship with the City of Nanaimo with respect to the maintenance and usage of the field (the Hornets cleared and built the field shortly after the clubhouse was finished).

We field 2 Men's teams and 1 women's team, a Masters level team( the Yoos Too Bees) and a flourishing Jr. and Minis program. We are working closely with the Vancouver Island University in helping them develop a varsity team, including providing coaching and training opportunities, field usage and hosting. This relationship has proven to be beneficial to both organizations and we look forward to future developments.

At the Nanaimo Hornets RFC, our players, members, and families are dedicated to creating, promoting, and encouraging an active interest in rugby in the Nanaimo area. To be a Hornet means we strive to help our members reach their full potential both on and off the field at all levels. We promote a healthy and safe atmosphere while teaching the values and traditions of rugby, as well as supporting our community at every opportunity. Our goal is to live as we play....with passion and pride, and with honor and integrity.

It is a great honour to be selected as President for the 2015-2016 season, and as president it gives me great pleasure to welcome all our members, supporters, visiting teams and match day officials to Nanaimo.

I would like to wish our club captain Brad Marshal, the players, coaches and managers of all the teams from mini's, youth, women and senior men's teams a successful season.

A word of thanks to our generous sponsors for their continued support which is much appreciated. I request we support are sponsors when ever possible.

The club could not function without the volunteers and we are fortunate to have dedicated members to ensure the running of the club smoothly. Thank you to everyone of you.

I look forward to welcoming you, our many friends and guest to the Nest! And I hope you all have a competitive, injury free and enjoyable season.
